So, I love Azealia Banks— To me, she’s everything I wish Nicki Minaj had been, and the video for her newest single Yung Rapunxel has me convinced that she’s continuing down that path. I was a little bit skeptical about the song at first because of it’s incredibly weird structure, but it’s evident now that the song was made explicitly to compliment the video, and that how it would sound on radio wasn’t the concern (although I imagine there might be a radio edit with the long silence missing).

I am a little perplexed as to why this was so overhyped, and why it’s the lead single from anything, considering its sound is pretty much the antithesis of mainstream. Regardless though, I find myself enamored with the staggering amounts of striking visual imagery and symbolism, and can see myself returning to this video many times to try and catch it all. I just hope whatever Azealia puts out next isn’t marred in mountains of delays, and keeps on being weird as all hell.

Far from it for me to ever support anything that Chris Brown does, but right now, I find myself at a crossroads. Although I personally do not like the man (although I do acknowledge that he is trying to improve his image, and I sympathize with that), I can’t deny that his new single Fine China, both the song and music video, are fantastic.

The song has a very smooth yet catchy sound that evokes feelings of Justin Timberlake’s Suit & Tie, and the visuals in the music video are very striking, yet not overly cluttered and hectic. This feels like a real return to form for Brown (i.e. before the Rihanna incident) while also feeling like a step forward, and I could see this becoming a big hit with the right amount of promotion.
